Are You REALLY Protected?
Monday, November 7, 2011 at 3:39PM According to a survey by International Data Corp (IDC), 64% of employees use the internet for personal interest during work hours. Personal internet usage accounts for over 30% of all internet usage during working hours. Additionally, 90% of organizations who responded have detected computer security breaches within the last 12 months, with 80% stating these breaches led to financial losses.
How do you protect yourself?
1. Implement a strong internet usage policy, and back it up. Block websites that you don’t want employees visiting, limit internet access to approved sites, and block employees from downloading files without manager permission.
2. Make sure you are not encouraging personal or unsafe internet use by using enterprise instant messaging services rather than consumer services (such as Yahoo! or GoogleTalk) that invite viruses, computer worms, and trojans.
3. Track your employees’ internet usage, read their instant messages and email, look at what they are downloading. Misuse of company provided internet, email, and instant messaging is misuse of company resources, and should be treated as such.
